“Hey, what’s going on between you and my sister?”

Nick turned from opening his carpetbag on the bed he’d been assigned to and answered Leo with a shrug. “Nothing I’m aware of. Why?”

Leaning against the bedroom wall, hands crossed over his chest, the boy gave him a long, measuring look. “I’ve seen the way she looks at you.”

Did she look at him in any particular way? Why did the possibility make him want to smile? For the sake of their conversation, though, he kept a nonchalant air. “I think you’re mistaken.”

Leo pushed himself off the wall and took a step closer. If the boy wanted to make himself look intimidating, he was doing a good job of it. “I don’t think so. And it seems to me that you’re starting to look at her in the same way.”

Was he? He couldn’t have that. If there was one thing his mother had taught him, it was that a gentleman ought not to give a girl false hope. Staring the boy down, he said emphatically, “I’m trying to win Miss Yount’s heart. So yes, I think you are mistaken.” Then, to avoid the boy’s piercing blue stare, he went around him and hung up his jacket. It had been a long ride to Glenda, and he was hot and starting to get cranky. “Could you go down and entertain our hosts for a little while? I’d like a few minutes to rest and clean myself up a bit. Heaven knows driving a team of animals is sweaty work.”

Silence met his request, then with a reluctant nod, Leo turned and left just as Joshua came in the room. “Looks like he has a burr under his saddle. What’s his problem?”

He shrugged. “Dunno. He’s been acting kind of strange since we left Belle.”

“Hmm. He might bear watching. You and I both know boys that age are unpredictable.”

True. But right now, the soft bed in front of him was calling to him. “Mind taking the first shift, then? I’m going to catch a few winks.”

Joshua’s lips twitched. “Driving wear you out? I didn’t take you to be a sissy.”

Nick only grunted in reply.

Joshua moved toward the door, adding another teasing remark. “Better not make us late to the show, Mr. Carrington.”

“I won’t.” But he’d been up since the crack of dawn and the stress and worry over seeing to everyone’s well-being was taking its toll. Less than a minute later, he was asleep.
